Ageing takes a toll on a person's appearance as he/she works hard to earn a living. It affects the skin around the eyes which can become loose, wrinkled and start to sag. In some mild cases I’ve encountered, eyebags are visible only when you look upward. In the more severe cases, the eyebags are more prominent, bulging and can be seen at all times. Your eye bags can give a tiresome and dull appearance to the eyes and can make you look older than you actually are.
In these cases, I recommend that you undergo an eye bag removal in Singapore, which can help remove droopy skin and puffiness from under the eye. It can also be used to remove excess skin and fatty tissues from your lower eyelid, especially for cases where their eye bags are loose or saggy. It improves the appearance of a person's eyes and helps remove imperfections such as crow's feet. Also known as lower eyelid surgery, eye bag removal is essential because eye bags do not discriminate – they can affect young and old people of different ethnicities.
How you can prevent, manage and cover up these eye bags is the main problem that Dream wants to solve for their patients. So, here’s a rundown of frequently asked questions from one of their trusted experts:
What causes eye bags to show up?
Here are some possible causes of eye bags that I’ve diagnosed from my patients:
- Sleep deprivation. Do not skimp on your sleep. Getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night is very important to prevent eye bags. Try sleeping with a second pillow so that your head is elevated, preventing fluid from accumulating around your eyes.
- Too much salt or alcohol. Both of these can dehydrate your skin and cause swelling around your eyes, which causes fluid retention.
- Allergies. Allergies can cause sinus congestion and can dilate blood vessels in a thin area of skin under the eye, giving the appearance of eye bags. If you suspect you have allergies, talk to your doctor for possible treatments.
- Hyperpigmentation. Discolouration under the eyes can make eye bags look more pronounced. The cause of this may be genetic.
- Sleeping in eye makeup. Leftover makeup (especially mascara and eyeliner) can irritate your eyes, so it is important to remove them before you go to sleep to avoid waking up with those dreaded dark eye bags.
- When do you need to see a doctor?
You may not like the way they look, but bags under the eyes are usually harmless and don't require medical care. See me as your doctor if the swelling is severe, persistent, painful, itchy or red. As much as possible, I will want to rule out other probable causes that can contribute to the swelling, such as thyroid disease, infection.
What is scarless eye bag removal?
There are several factors associated with eyebag formation: stress, lack of sleep, genetics, allergies and loss of skin elasticity and collagen production. For mild cases, you need a scarless eye bag removal. It is a technique of removing the excess fat deposits underneath your eyelids from a tiny incision inside the lower eyelid so that there is no visible scar from the outside. This surgical treatment directly impacts the eye area and is performed under a combination of local anaesthesia and full sedation. After I remove the eyebags and fat deposits in the procedure, you can expect to look refreshed and more youthful. This procedure is most suitable for patients with mild to moderate eye bags whose skin is not very loose.
Does this procedure involve pain?
I will administer some anaesthetics to you to numb the eye region so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. You may also opt to be sedated throughout the whole process. The procedure takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
What should you do on the day of the procedure?
Make sure you inform me or the clinic staff beforehand if you have red eyes, fever, eye irritation or any general illness. Painkillers, smoking, alcohol and vitamin E should be avoided a week before the operation.
How is eye bag removal surgery performed?
During blepharoplasty, the surgeon cuts along the creases of your eyelids to trim sagging skin and muscle and remove excess fat. After the excess tissue is removed, he/she will then join the skin with tiny stitches.
Who performs the surgery?
There are two main types of surgeries for eye bags – cosmetic blepharoplasty and functional blepharoplasty. Both can be performed by a surgeon who specializes in the eyes and is usually an outpatient procedure.
How long is the expected downtime?
Some of my patients experienced minor swelling and bruising, which will diminish in a few days. Most of the time, there are no visible scars. Full recovery from the eye bag removal takes about 1 to 2 weeks.
Is eye bag surgery safe?
Many studies and trials have shown that blepharoplasty is an effective and safe operation. Every year, several Singaporeans undergo scarless eye bag removal and complications rarely occur.
